Match Recap: Seattle Reign FC Falls 2-0 to Gotham FC
Seattle Reign FC fell 2-0 at Lumen Field on Monday night to NJ/NY Gotham FC. Despite the Reign pushing for an equalizer, it wasn’t enough to overcome a goal scored by the visiting team in each half.
In the first half of the match, Reign FC goalkeeper Claudia Dickey was put to work, defending seven shots from Gotham FC. The Reign looked to make the most of their offensive opportunities and apply pressure to Gotham’s backline but couldn’t quite break through. Defender Shae Holmes and forward Tziarra King both managed shots in the half but did not find the back of the net.
Gotham scored the only goal of the half in the 41st minute, when Delanie Sheehan received a rebounded ball in the middle of the 18-yard box and took one touch before slicing the ball into the back of the net.
After halftime, the Reign were searching for a goal to eliminate the deficit, taking their first shot in the 76’ minute from midfielder Jaelin Howell. Before the Reign had another chance on goal, Gotham FC added a second, when Esther struck the ball from the second six bringing the score to 2-0.
Before the half was over, midfielder Ji So-Yun and forward Nérilia Mondésir both took shots on target, forcing Berger to make saves in goal, but couldn’t quite find the final touch needed to score. At the final whistle, it wasn’t the Reign’s night as the team fell 2-0 at Lumen Field
