Tacoma City Council Approves Execution of LOI For Soccer-Specific Stadium

The Tacoma City Council voted 8-1 in favor of on Resolution 40567, which authorized the city to execute a non-binding letter of intent between the City of Tacoma, Metro Parks Tacoma, and The Soccer Club of Tacoma regarding the potential construction of a soccer-specific stadium on the site of the existing Heidelberg Sports Complex near Cheney Stadium. The new stadium would serve the future home of Reign FC and Tacoma Defiance, the USL Championship affiliate of Seattle Sounders FC.

The letter of intent is the result of collaboration between The Soccer Club of Tacoma, which is a joint venture between the Tacoma Rainiers and Seattle Sounders, Metro Parks Tacoma, and the City of Tacoma following the conclusion of the feasibility study presented to the Tacoma City Council last July. The letter of intent will serve as a framework for further discussions between the parties regarding stadium design, funding sources, and future development around the new stadium.

“We are appreciative of all the work done by the City of Tacoma, Metro Parks Tacoma, the Tacoma Rainiers, and the Seattle Sounders to help move this project forward,” said Reign FC CEO Bill Predmore. “We were pleased by the vote but also understand there remains much work to do. We are looking forward to supporting the Rainiers and Sounders in this process while collaborating with the City of Tacoma and Tacoma Metro Parks in an effort to realize our shared vision for a new soccer-specific stadium.”

Tacoma mayor Victoria Woodards voiced particular support for the measure, citing excitement at Tacoma’s ability to be a trendsetter in building a world-class venue for the women’s professional game.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to bring a soccer stadium to Tacoma. I look forward to hearing from our community about their thoughts on what this means for Tacoma," said Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards in an interview with KING5 in Seattle.
