Long and Rapinoe Named as Allocated Players for 2020 Season

The National Women’s Soccer League today announced that Reign FC’s Megan Rapinoe and Allie Long have been named as U.S. federation allocated players for the 2020 season. Rapinoe has been an allocated player since the league’s inaugural season, while Long first became an allocated player in 2017.

Long made 14 appearances for Reign FC in 2019, recording two assists and helping anchor the midfield for the club as it made the playoffs for the second consecutive year. Long also made her World Cup debut at 31, fulfilling a lifelong dream and helping the United States win its record fourth Women’s World Cup.

Rapinoe is coming off an epic 2019, having claimed the Golden Ball and Golden Boot at the World Cup, before being recognized as the Best FIFA Women’s Player, as well as the 2019 Ballon D’Or. The forward returned to Reign FC in time to help spur them to the playoffs, making five appearances for the club down the home stretch of the season.

Rapinoe is currently nominated for the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award. Fans can vote for their choice until Monday, March 2. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, March 24.

Reign FC will open the season on the road against Washington Spirit on Saturday, April 18. The club will face the Chicago Red Stars in its home opener on Sunday, May 3.
