Lauren Barnes Re-Signs with Reign FC for 2020 Season
Reign FC today announced that it has re-signed defender Lauren Barnes for the 2020 season in an agreement that includes a club option for the 2021 season.
Barnes is a Reign FC original, having played for the club since its inaugural 2013 season. The centerback has 149 regular season appearances for the club and has helped Reign FC maintain one of the league’s stingiest defenses. Barnes was recognized as NWSL Defender of the Year in 2016.
“Bringing Lu back to Reign FC for the 2020 season was one of our most important objectives in the off-season,” said Reign FC CEO Bill Predmore. “She has been one of the most consistent, reliable, and accomplished defenders in the NWSL since its inception. Lu is a brilliant leader and truly great person. We are thrilled to have her back for the upcoming season.”
In 2019, Barnes was the lynchpin of a Reign FC back line that helped the club reach the NWSL semifinals for the second consecutive year. Barnes was one of the league’s elite defenders, conceding 0.39 fouls per 90 minutes en route to her second selection to the NWSL Second XI.
Barnes also made 75 clearances, 26 blocks, 35 interceptions and won 72.2 percent of her duels in 2019.
“It’s truly an honor to play for the Reign,” Barnes said. “The club strives to provide a culture where players can grow and reach their potential. I’m proud to be a ‘Reign original’ back for my eighth season and can’t wait to see what the 2020 version of the Reign can achieve. It’s going to be an exciting year with the addition of the OL Groupe and our originals Bill and Teresa.”
