Rapinoe Nets Game-Winner for U.S. in World Cup Final

Reign FC forward and U.S. Women’s National team captain Megan Rapinoe converted a penalty kick for the United States in the 61st minute in the Women’s World Cup final on Sunday, helping the country clinch its record fourth world title. Rapinoe won the Golden Boot and was named Player of the Match, becoming only the second American to win the scoring title apart from Michelle Akers.

"I don’t think I can (describe it),” Rapinoe said. “It’s unbelievable to know all the people who put in so much in this group. We have all our families and friends here. It’s surreal. I don’t know how to feel right now. It’s ridiculous."

Referee Stephanie Frappart went to video review in the in the 59th minute after Alex Morgan appeared to be fouled inside the penalty area. Frappart returned from the review and pointed to the spot.

Rapinoe stepped up and hit a penalty low and to the right side, beating Dutch keeper Sari van Veenendaal to score her sixth goal of the tournament.

Rose Lavelle added to the advantage in the 69th minute, driving forward and finishing with a well-struck left-footed shot to the right side.

The U.S. outshot the Netherlands 17-6, including a 9-1 advantage in shots on target. Leeuwinnen keeper van Veenendaal made seven saves in the loss.

Rapinoe and midfielder Allie Long will rejoin a Reign FC side that sits at the top of the NWSL table after its 1-0 win over Portland Thorns FC on the road on Friday.
