Jodie Taylor’s England Finish Fourth at World Cup
Reign FC forward Jodie Tayler secured a fourth-place finish with the England national team at the Women’s World Cup in France on Saturday, losing 2-1 to third-place winners Sweden. Taylor subbed in and played 40 minutes in the loss.
Sweden jumped in front in the 11th minute when Sweden’s Kosovare Asllani jumped on the end of a failed clearance and finished to the bottom right corner to give Sweden the lead.
Sofia Jakobsson doubled the advantage ten minutes later, cutting in from the right side and curling a ball to the right side net to make it 2-0.
England’s Fran Kirby responded in the 31st minute, cutting in from the right alley and finishing to the far post to score England’s only goal in the contest.
Ellen White thought she had tallied the equalizer minutes later after finishing past Swedish keeper Rut Hedvig Lindahl, but her goal was disallowed for a handling offense after video review.
Taylor subbed on for Beth Mead in the 50th minute, but could not spur the Lionesses to a second goal.
The fourth-place finish is England’s second-best ever finish, having finished in third at the 2015 tournament in Canada.
