Catley, Williams and Kellond-Knight all Feature for Matildas in 2-1 Loss

A brace by Italian striker Barbara Bonansea, completed in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time, was enough to see the Azzurre upset Australia 2-1 at the Women’s World Cup in France. Reign FC’s Lydia Williams, Steph Catley and Elise Kellond-Knight all saw time for the Matildas.

Australia took the lead in the 22nd minute. Sam Kerr drew a penalty kick. Kerr’s initial effort was saved by Laura Giuliani, but the rebound fell kindly for Kerr for the striker’s first World Cup goal.

Bonansea responded in the 56th minute, stealing the ball in the attacking third and slotting to the far side net past Williams.

The game-winner came in the match’s final moments. A free kick from Valentina Cernoia was turned in by Bonansea at the back post after Williams came off her line but couldn’t get to the ball.

Catley and Williams both played the full 90 for Matildas, while Kellond-Knight entered as a substitute in the 83rd minute and served in several dangerous set pieces.
