Megan Rapinoe Bags Goal and Two Assists as U.S. Beats Thailand 13-0

Megan Rapinoe started for the U.S. Women’s National Team, wearing the captain’s armband for the first time at the World Cup, in a 13-0 victory over Thailand. Rapinoe opened her tournament scoring account in the 79th minute and assisted on two other goals as the United States tallied the most goals in a single match in World Cup history.

Rapinoe added her strike on an end-to-end counterattack to make it 9-0, running on to a curling low cross from Mallory Pugh and firing it past Thai keeper Sukanya Chor Charoenying to extend the blowout.

An assist from Rapinoe led to Morgan’s fourth goal of the night, pushing a short ball into the striker who finished with her left foot to add to her tally. Earlier, Rapinoe assisted Sam Mewis as the midfielder scored in her World Cup debut.

Alex Morgan needed just 13 minutes to find the back of the net for the United States. The forward finished with five goals and two assists in the historic victory.

The United States, which had five outfield players making their World Cup debut, erupted out of the gates at the start of the second half. Already leading 3-0, the U.S. added four more goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half.

The Stars and Stripes didn’t let up in the late minutes, adding six goals in the final 16 minutes of play to complete the victory.
