Rapinoe Scores Two More to Take Down France

Reign FC forward Megan Rapinoe scored two more goals for the U.S. Women’s National Team at the World Cup on Friday, eliminating host nation France at the Parc de Princes in Paris. Rapinoe now has five goals in four appearances at the tournament.

“This is what it’s all about,” Rapinoe said. “Obviously we would have liked to play a little nicer today, but we’re moving on to the semis. We’ll enjoy this one. It’s so special to beat the host nation in the Parc de Princes, I’ll remember this always.”

Rapinoe’s first goal came on an early free kick. Five minutes into the match, the forward spun in a low kick from the left alley that bounced through traffic before finding the back of the net.

The United States scored again in the 65th minute, running on to a cutback cross from Tobin Heath to double the lead, finishing at the back post from close range.

France pulled a goal back in the 81st minute, when French centerback Wendie Renard headed in a Gaetane Thiney free kick to give the hosts some life.

France put the U.S. under pressure, outshooting the Stars and Stripes 20-10, though the U.S. had an 8-5 advantage in shots on target.

Three Reign FC players may feature in the World Cup semifinal, as the United States’ Rapinoe and Allie Long take on Jodie Taylor and England at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Décines-Charpieu on Tuesday, July 2 at 12:00 p.m. PT. Fans can join the official Reign FC World Cup Viewing Parties at Rhein Haus in Seattle and Tacoma for the match.
