Reign FC Wins Second Straight Road Match
Reign FC used two goals in the span of five minutes in the first half to win its second straight match against Utah Royals FC at Rio Tinto Stadium on Friday. Jess Fishlock scored a goal and added an assist in the win.
Fishlock opened the scoring in the 30th minute. After a turnover at the edge of the attacking third, Fishlock pressed forward and laid the ball off to Balcer to her left. Balcer hit it back for a quick return and Fishlock finished to the right side.
Reign FC doubled their advantage five minutes later. Fishlock dropped a ball to Onumonu as the forward slipped behind Utah’s back line and Onumonu finished past Nicole Barnhart to score her first NWSL goal.
Fishlock would be subbed from the game in the 54th minute after going down with an injury. The midfielder was stretchered off the field, making way for Addison Steiner.
Fishlock’s performance—including her third straight match with a goal—earned her Reign FC’s Player of the Match award in the victory.
Head coach Vlatko Andonovski kept the pressure on the hosts, bringing on Darian Jenkins for Shea Groom in the 57th minute. Jenkins harassed the Royals back line, helping Reign FC maintain control of the match.
Reign FC keeper Casey Murphy made two big saves in preserving her second NWSL clean sheet. The keeper twice denied Katie Stengel, once using her face to block a point-blank shot in the 70th minute, before snatching a Stengel header right underneath the crossbar in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time.
Reign FC outshot Utah 12-7, including a 4-2 advantage in shots on target in the win.
The club continues their four-match road stand against rivals Portland Thorns FC on Friday, July 5 at 8:00 p.m. PT.
The club returns home on July 28 for a match against the Red Stars. Tickets are available here, or by calling the Reign FC ticket office at (855) REIGN-FC.
