Jess Fishlock Named NWSL Player of the Week for Week 9
The National Women’s Soccer League announced today that it had named Reign FC midfielder Jess Fishlock as the league’s Player of the Week for Week Nine today. Fishlock scored a goal and took 11 shots in Reign FC’s 1-1 draw with the Washington Spirit on June 15.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
“It’s nice,” Fishlock said. “I thank those for voting, but I want to say thanks to my teammates. We’re doing a great job at the moment of playing some good football and creating a lot of chances. That’s what was good for me on the weekend. I’m happy to accept the award, but I want to thank my teammates for helping make me look so good.”
Fishlock took an aggressive approach to the game, driving Reign FC forward and forcing three saves from Spirit keeper Aubrey Bledsoe and four blocks from the Washington defense.
Fellow midfielder Bev Yanez praised the Welsh international’s play.
“It’s been an absolute blast playing with Jess again,” Yanez said. “She’s just such an incredible player and she brings so much to the team. I think her personality and her work ethic and the way she plays and who she is so inspiring. It’s been absolutely a privilege to play alongside her and I’m very happy for her.”
This is Fishlock’s fifth Player of the Week award, the fourth most in league history. Reign FC’s Megan Rapinoe is third all-time, having won the award six times.
