Reign FC Midfielder Allie Long Makes World Cup Debut in Win Over Chile
Reign FC midfielder Allie Long made her FIFA Women’s World Cup debut Sunday, subbing in for the U.S. Women’s National Team in the 59th minute of a 3-0 win over Chile. With the win, the United States guaranteed itself a spot in the round of 16.
The U.S. took an early lead when Carli Lloyd hit a left-footed volley on a partial clearance that sailed into the goal in the 11th minute. With the goal, Lloyd has scored in six consecutive Women’s World Cup matches, setting a new record.
Julie Ertz added to the lead, heading in a Tierna Davidson corner in the 26th minute to score her 19th international goal. Lloyd made it 3-0 in the 35th minute, scoring her 10th goal at a World Cup after heading in a corner of her own.
Long came on for Lindsay Horan and helped clamp things down in midfield as the U.S. saw out the remainder of the match.
The win was the United States’ seventh consecutive in a World Cup match and its 12th without a loss.
The U.S. sits in first place in Group F through two matches. They will place second-place Sweden to determine the group winner on Thursday, June 20 at 12:00 p.m. PT.
