All Reign FC Players at World Cup Expected to Qualify for Knockout Rounds

Through two group stage matches at the Women’s World Cup, all eight Reign FC players at the competition - representing England, Spain, Japan, Australia, and the United States - are in position to qualify for the knockout rounds of the tournament. The third and final matches of the group stage begin on Monday June 17 at 9:00 a.m. PT.

Spain will face China on Monday, June 17 at 9:00 a.m. PT. Fullback Celia Jimenez Delgado has not appeared for La Roja during the tournament. Spain currently sits in second place in Group B, with three points through two matches.

Australia will face Jamaica on Tuesday, June 18 at 12:00 p.m. PT. Goalkeeper Lydia Williams, defender Steph Catley and midfielder Elise Kellond-Knight have all appeared in both of the Matildas’ matches. Australia is third in Group C, but it is likely to qualify even with a loss as Jamaica sits at the bottom of the group with a -8 goal difference.

The final matchday in Group D will produce the first possible meeting between two Reign FC players at the World Cup, as Jodie Taylor’s England will face Rumi Utsugi’s Japan on Wednesday, June 19 at 12:00 p.m. PT. Taylor scored the game-winning goal for the Lionesses in a 1-0 win over Argentina on June 14, while Utsugi has not yet appeared for Japan. England is at the top of the group with six points, while Japan follows closely behind with four.

Finally, the United States will have a chance to win Group F outright against Sweden on Thursday, June 20 at 12:00 p.m. PT. Megan Rapinoe scored a goal and added two assists in the U.S.’ 13-0 win over Thailand, while 31-year-old Allie Long made her World Cup debut as a substitute in a 3-0 win over Chile. The United States is currently at the top of the group with 6 points and a +16 goal difference, while Sweden has six points and a +6 goal difference. Sweden eliminated the United States from the 2016 Olympics on penalties in the quarterfinals of that competition.
