Megan Rapinoe Nominated for USWNT Player of the Year

Megan Rapinoe has been nominated for the U.S. Women’s National Team’s Player of the Year award, U.S. Soccer announced on Tuesday. Rapinoe joins teammates Julie Ertz, Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Rose Lavelle, Alyssa Naeher on the shortlist for the award.

Votes for the award are collected from national team coaches, players who earned a cap in 2019, members of the U.S. Soccer board of directors, U.S. Soccer Athletes’ Council members, NWSL head coaches, select media members, college coaches, former players and administrators. Votes are collected from November 26 to December 6, with the winner being announced during the second week of December.

Rapinoe had a banner year for the Women’s National Team, taking home the Golden Boot and Golden Ball as the United States won its second consecutive Women’s World Cup. The forward was also named the Best FIFA Women’s Player as the top player in the world in 2019 and has also been nominated for the 2019 Ballon D’Or.

The U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year award has been presented annually since 1985. Abby Wambach holds a record six awards, while Mia Hamm earned the accolade five times. Alex Morgan is the defending titleholder.
