World Cup Recap: USWNT and Netherlands Draw

In the United States Women’s National Team’s second match of their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign, the team split the points with the Netherlands, earning a draw after initially going down a goal in the match. OL Reign midfielder Rose Lavelle was the only Reign player to make an appearance in the match.

The United States did not have the strongest start to the match, allowing the Netherlands to find threatening opportunities. However, as the United States gained their footing, they began to take control in the match.

In the 17th minute, the Netherlands managed to find their first shot on target on the match and unfortunately for the United States, the shot found the back of the net. Jill Rood received a ball at the top of the box, and she finished it effectively with a low shot into the lower left corner.

While the U.S. had some chances before the half was over, Rood’s 17th minute goal stood as the difference maker at halftime.

In the second half, the United States continued to get forward and pressure the Netherlands, searching for an equalizer. OL Reign midfielder Rose Lavelle was the lone sub in the second half for the United States and proved to be a game changer early into the half.

After a tough challenge from Danielle Van de Donk fired the United States up, advantage was played by the referee and the team won a corner kick. Lavelle stepped up to the take the kick and served an in-swinging ball to the near post. Horan lost her defender to get on the end of the ball, heading it into the back of the net to level the score in the 62nd minute.

After the goal, the momentum was on the USWNT’s side, but every chance the team found was just shy of reaching the back of the net and the match ultimately ended 1-1. With the result, the USWNT stays atop Group E, tied with Netherlands on four points but with an advantage on goal differential.

NEXT UP FOR THE USWNT: Next Tuesday, August 1, the United States Women’s National Team is set to play its last group stage match, against Portugal at 12:00 a.m. PT. The match will take place Eden Park and can be watched on FOX, Telemundo or Peacock.
