Olympic Quarterfinals Preview

All five OL Reign players that are in Japan for the 2020 Olympic Games have advanced to the quarterfinals. There are four total quarterfinal matches being played on Friday, July 30. OL Reign players and their national teams are competing in three of those matches. If a team loses their quarterfinal match, they are eliminated from the tournament. The winning teams will advance to semifinals, set to be played on Monday, August 2.

Olympic Quarterfinal Schedule NBCSN 

1:00 a.m. PT – Canada (Quinn) vs. Brazil (Angelina)  

2:00 a.m. PT – Great Britain vs. Australia  

3:00 a.m. PT – Sweden vs. Japan (Momiki)  

4:00 a.m. PT – Netherlands vs. United States (Lavelle, Rapinoe)  

 

Canada vs. Brazil – 1:00 a.m. PT 

Quinn will be representing Canada and Angelina, representing Brazil will go head-to-head in the first quarterfinal match of the morning. Canada finished in second place in Group E, with five points and a positive one goal differential. Brazil finished second place in Group F, with seven points and a positive six goal differential. Both teams are undefeated so far in the tournament. Brazil is ranked No. 7 and Canada is ranked No. 8, so it is sure to be an exciting battle.  

Sweden vs. Japan – 3:00 a.m. PT 

OL Reign forward Nicole Momiki will be representing Japan in their battle against Sweden. Sweden was the only team to finish with a perfect record in the group stages, boasting nine points with a positive seven goal differential and first place in Group G. Japan finished in third place in Group E, with four points and a goal differential of zero. Sweden is ranked No. 5 and Japan is ranked No. 10. Japan is largely considered the underdog in this game, so they will be looking to pull off an upset and break Sweden’s undefeated record. 

Netherlands vs. USA – 4:00 a.m. PT 

Rose Lavelle and Megan Rapinoe are set to team up against the Netherlands with their U.S. teammates. The Netherlands finished first place in Group F with seven points and a positive thirteen goal differential. The United States finished second place in Group G, with four points and a positive two goal differential. The U.S. is ranked No. 1 and the Netherlands is ranked No. 4. The United States group stage record of 1-1-1 came as a surprise to many fans, so the predictions for this match are split.
