Match Recap: Seattle Reign FC Falls on the Road
The Reign fell 4-0 on Saturday night at Providence Park in a tough match on the road to round out a busy week. Now, the team looks to the next match on Sunday, May 19 back home at Lumen Field.
The first half of the match was fast and physical as the rivals battled for the first time since last season. Portland took the first shot of the match in the seventh minute of the match and the Reign followed not long after, in the 11th minute.
In the 16th minute of the match, the Reign nearly found the back of the net, but forward Tziarra King’s volley missed the frame of the goal. Just three minutes later, in the 19th minute, Seattle earned one of their best chances of the match, but forward Veronica Latsko’s headed shot was just wide of the goal.
On the other side of the ball, defender Shae Holmes made a crucial toe poke to keep Portland foward Sophia Smith away from goal the preserve the scoreline.
The Thorns scored the first goal of the match in the 42nd minute, when Smith played a ball to Olivia Moultrie, who shot the ball into the side netting to close out the half.
In a tough second half, the Reign conceded three goals. The first came from a penalty kick in the 80th minute, awarded to Portland the match was stopped for video review. Seattle nearly pulled a goal back in the 89th minute, when forward Bethany Balcer’s header was directed toward the back of the net, but a goal line save from Portland’s defense kept the Reign off the board. In stoppage time, Portland added two more goals, from midfielder Hina Sugita and forward Payton Linnehan.
