Jess Fishlock Earns NWSL Save of the Week
The National Women’s Soccer League announced today that OL Reign midfielder Jess Fishlock has earned the NWSL Verizon Save of the Week for her save in the 62nd minute of the match on Saturday, October 16, against the Washington Spirit at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.
The National Women's Soccer League Save of the Week is a weekly award given to individual players in the National Women's Soccer League since 2016. The honor is awarded by popular social media vote to the player deemed to have made the best save over the past week.
This is the first time that Fishlock has won this award. The veteran midfielder has played in 22 games this season, starting in 20 of those games. In her 1,715 minutes of playing time this season, she has scored five goals and added four assists.
Her 62nd minute save against Washington was huge and prevented the Reign from conceding a third goal. Trinity Rodman took a close range shot that appeared to be a guaranteed goal to put Washington up 3-0, but Fishlock hustled back to the goal line to throw herself in front of the ball and make an incredible save with her feet and keep the score 2-0.
Fishlock is the second OL Reign player to receive this honor in the 2021 season, after goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi won save of the week in Week 14.
