Eugénie Le Sommer Named NWSL Player of the Week

The National Women’s Soccer League announced today that it has named OL Reign forward Eugénie Le Sommer as the league’s Budweiser Player of the Week for her performance against the Kansas City Current on Saturday, October 30 at Legends Field in Kansas City. Le Sommer scored two goals in OL Reign’s 3-0 win over Kansas City, earning her third ever NWSL brace.

Like many games this season, Le Sommer came out hard from the first whistle, creating opportunities when OL Reign had the ball and working to gain possession when the team did not have the ball. She led the team in shots taken and shots on target, with five shots and four on target. She connected 24 good passes and crosses. Le Sommer also hustled throughout the match to apply heavy pressure to Kansas City, winning the ball for OL Reign a total of 10 times throughout the match, tied only with Jess Fishlock.

In the 49th minute of the match, Le Sommer scored the second goal of the night for OL Reign. The goal came on a Megan Rapinoe corner kick. Rose Lavelle got on the ball initially, taking a touch to redirect the ball to the back post, where Le Sommer was there to tap the ball into the back of the net and double the lead and increase OL Reign’s confidence in the match.

Le Sommer yet another goal in the 64th minute of the match. This goal came from a beautiful combination play, beginning at the feet of fellow Lyon loanee Dzsenifer Marozsán. Marozsán played a perfect ball through to Rapinoe, who put in a solid cross to the back post. Le Sommer was there to head the ball into the back of the net, earning her third brace of the season.

The world class forward has been invaluable to OL Reign season. After joining the team on loan from Olympique Lyonnais in June, she has played in 17 matches since arriving in Tacoma. She started fourteen of those matches, playing over 1,200 minutes. She has earned her place in the OL Reign season leaders lists, with seven goals and three assists this season.

“Eug is just one of those players, you know? She will play passes and hit crosses, do things on the ball and score these goals that just leave you saying, “oh my gosh,”” said OL Reign Head Coach Laura Harvey.

This is Le Sommer’s third time receiving this award. She previously won in Week 11 of this season for her performance against Racing Louisville, where she scored her first NWSL goal and earned her first NWSL brace and in Week 18 for her performance again Orlando, where she scored her second NWSL brace.
