Season at a Glance: How OL Reign Got Here

As OL Reign prepares to play the Orlando Pride in their final match of the regular season and battle for a top-two finish, here’s a brief timeline of how the team got to this point.


May 8 – OL Reign plays their home opener against Racing Louisville FC and battles to a 2-2 draw to start the regular season.

 

May 22 – Lauren Barnes becomes the first player in NWSL history to reach 15,000 minutes played, with the game result being 0-0, earning the first clean sheet at home in 2022 against the Washington Spirit. 

 

May 29 – Kim Little returns to the Reign for the first time since 2016, joining the team on loan for six games throughout the summer. 

 

July 1 – OL Reign breaks their club attendance record for a stand-alone match at their annual Pride Match, with 7,519 fans in attendance at Lumen Field.

 

July 10 – The very next home match, OL Reign sets new club attendance record for a stand-alone match in their game against the Portland Thorns, which had 9,032 fans in attendance at Lumen Field. 

 

July 17 – Tobin Heath makes her first NWSL appearance since 2019 against the Kansas City Current. 

 

July 30 – OL Reign secures first road win of the 2022 season against Angel City FC. The Reign went into halftime down 2-0 and put on a second-half comeback to win 3-2 with a late goal from Tobin Heath. Jordyn Huitema makes her NWSL debut. 

 

August 14 – Head Coach Laura Harvey reaches 82 all-time regular season wins, becoming the winningest NWSL coach in the regular season after defeating Gotham FC 4-1. Megan Rapinoe’s penalty kick goal was the 2,500 NWSL all-time regular season goal scored and OL Reign got a visit from their sister club, Olympique Lyonnais.

 

August 20 – OL Reign wins the 2022 Women’s Cup in Louisville after coming back to defeat Racing Louisville 2-1. 

 

September 17 – First Assistant Coach Sam Laity leads the Reign to their first-ever victory in North Carolina as the interim head coach after Head Coach Laura Harvey tested positive for COVID. 

 

September 21 – Megan Rapinoe scores the game-winning goal against Gotham FC, which was her seventh consecutive game with either a goal or an assist, setting a new club record. Additionally, Rapinoe tied the record for most penalty kick goals all-time in NWSL history (12) with Kim Little. 

 

September 24 – OL Reign clinches a spot in the 2022 NWSL Playoffs with a 2-0 win over the Houston Dash, completing a three-game road trip and securing a win from all three games – the only team this season to play three games in a row on the road and win all three.
