Match Recap: OL Reign Beats Club América 2-1 to Advance to Women’s Cup Final

OL Reign won their semifinal match in The Women’s Cup in Louisville, Kentucky, against Club América. The team now awaits the result of the Racing Louisville FC vs. AC Milan match to determine who they will go head-to-head with in the final.

OL Reign started the match by applying intense pressure to Club América, before eventually dropping off and absorbing pressure from their opponents. With a lineup relying heavily on their depth, OL Reign held strong against the Mexico City based side.

OL Reign rookie Laurel Ivory did well in goal to keep Club América off the scoreboard through the first half, being called on several times to make saves. In the attack, OL Reign struggled to connect in the final third of the field. At the halftime whistle, the teams were level at zero.

After the break, OL Reign and Club América came back out, hungry to find the back of the net and secure a place in the Women’s Cup final. The first goal of the match was scored by Club América in the 60th minute. The play started on set piece for Club América. OL Reign’s wall deflected the ball down, but it still slipped through into the box, where Kiana Palacios slid in to finish it, putting her team up 1-0.

OL Reign did not find an equalizer until the 79th minute. Forward Veronica Latsko sent a cross into the box. Club América struggled to clear the ball, creating chaos in the 18-yard box. After a blocked shot, the ball was half-cleared to top of the box, where forward Tziarra King was waiting. King took a beautiful one touch shot, perfectly placing the ball into the back of the net.

Now energized, OL Reign found another goal in the 82nd minute. Latsko once again served a ball into the box, this time finding her OL Reign teammates at the back post. The ball was headed in toward Club América’s goalkeeper but popped loose on the goal line before OL Reign midfielder Olivia Van der Jagt stepped up to poke it into the back of net to give OL Reign the lead.

OL Reign did well to keep Club América from scoring through the rest of regulation and added stoppage time, securing the comeback win and a place in The Women’s Cup final.
