OL Reign to Debut National Black Business Month Armband on Sunday

This month, OL Reign’s captain will wear an armband to honor and highlight Black Business Month. The armband, much like OL Reign’s AANHPI Heritage Month armband, is a bright, strong and bold piece.

This armband is the first part of OL Reign’s efforts to highlight Black owned businesses in the Seattle area. Though the club will be spotlighting some of the team’s favorite local Black owned businesses throughout the month, it was important that this support was also reflected in the artwork on the armband for the month of August.

The artwork on the armband was influenced by the silhouettes and movement of Jacob Lawrence, as well as the bright and intricate patterns of Kehinde Wiley. Being able to bring together that bright and modern feel with historical significance was important to the designer and became a key focus for her when creating this design.

Since color and design are two incredibly impactful ways to convey a message and emotion, the colors chosen for this armband were picked and paired to convey pride and power. The gold was chosen to symbolize pride, while the red was chosen to show passion and power. The blue was chosen to convey peace and harmony and the green was chosen to show renewal and growth. Keeping the design bold in form, bright in color and representative of movement was very important to the designer.

Keep an eye out in the month of August for OL Reign’s bold armband design, as well as additional efforts to support local Black owned businesses in the community.
