Sofia Huerta Named NWSL Player of the Week

The National Women’s Soccer League announced today that it has named OL Reign defender Sofia Huerta as the league’s Budweiser Player of the Week for her solid performances throughout OL Reign’s three game week. Huerta notched two assists across the three games from May 22-29.

Huerta served both game-winning assists for OL Reign in the team’s 1-0 wins over the Kansas City Current and San Diego Wave FC. Against Kansas City, Huerta looped a ball into the head of forward Bethany Balcer at the back post in the 80th minute of the match. The goal went unanswered by Kansas City as OL Reign earned their first win of the season.

In OL Reign’s next game, Huerta curled another ball into the box, this time on a set piece in the 75th minute. The perfectly placed cross found the head of midfielder Rose Lavelle and once again, Huerta earned the game-winning assist.

The hardworking defender is one of two OL Reign players to have started and played every minute of OL Reign’s 2022 regular season campaign. She has connected 14 key passes and 226 passes total through six matches. On defense, Huerta has made five clearances, five interceptions and three blocks.

Huerta is tied for second place across the league with two assists on the season. Her next assist will tie Racing Louisville forward Jess McDonald's league record of 28 regular season career assists.

Huerta is the first OL Reign player to receive this honor in 2022. This is her fifth time receiving this award and her first time receiving this award with OL Reign.
