Megan Rapinoe Named NWSL Player of the Month
The National Women’s Soccer League has named OL Reign forward Megan Rapinoe the NWSL Player of the Month for August. Rapinoe returned to OL Reign recently after helping the USWNT to earn the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The National Women's Soccer League Player of the Month is a monthly soccer award given to individual players in the National Women's Soccer League. The honor is awarded to the player deemed to have put in the best performances over the past month by a panel of journalists who regularly cover the league.
Rapinoe played in two NWSL matches in August and went 2-0-0 in the games she played with OL Reign, to help the team to a 3-1-0 record in the month of August.
Rapinoe helped OL Reign to earn a comeback 3-2 win against NJ/NY Gotham FC and a 2-1 win over Portland Thorns FC in a historic doubleheader event at Lumen Field. The forward started both matches and played a total of 172 minutes. She scored four goals in the two games, netting back-to-back braces for the first time since 2017. On top of that, Rapinoe earned one assist.
Rapinoe’s back-to-back braces brought her total goals scored to five this season. She now sits tied for third place in goal scoring and is in the running for the NWSL golden boot award.
This is Rapinoe’s third time winning the award after taking home the honor in March 2018 and July 2017. She is now tied for the second most Player of the Month honors in the NWSL, with Crystal Dunn, Sam Kerr and Christine Sinclair.
OL Reign midfielder Jess Fishlock received the second most votes for player of the month, followed by Portland Thorns FC midfielder Angela Salem.
OL Reign play their next match of the regular season on the road against Racing Louisville this Saturday, September 4 at 4:30 p.m. PT.
