Around OL: Positive Start to the Season for Lyon

OL Féminin go 3-0-0 in Frist Three D1 Arkema Games  

Since the 2021/2022 season has begun, Lyon has not lost a match. League action started on August 27 at OL’s home stadium in Lyon. The team took on Stade de Reims and came away with a decisive 3-0 win. OL’s first goal was an own goal from Stade de Reims in the 6th minute of the match. With an early advantage, Lyon pressed to add another goal just a few minutes later. In the 10th minute, Delphine Cascarino scored her first goal of the season to double Lyon’s lead. The third goal did not come until stoppage time in the second half, when substitute Selma Bacha netted her first of the season. Keeper Christiane Endler earned her first shutout of the season in goal. 

In their next match, OL squared off against Saint-Etienne in a fierce derby match on September 5 and came away with a 6-0 win at their home stadium. The game featured six different goal scorers. Catarina Macario opened the scoring for Lyon in the 18th minute of the match. Amel Majri and Melvine Malard also got on the scoresheet in the first half. In the second half, Emelyne Laurent was the first to score for Lyon. Damaris Egurrola added a fifth goal for Lyon before Bacha scored the last goal of the game in the 84th minute. Endler recorded her second consecutive shutout. 

Most recently, OL played on September 12. Lyon downed Dijon 6-0 to earn their second consecutive 6-0 result. The goal scoring began in the third minute of the match, thanks to Catarina Macario. Macario went onto score another goal in the 37th minute of the match. Malard also added a goal to the scoreboard in the first half. The final three goals were scored in the second half, all by substitute Signe Brunn. She bagged the goals for her hattrick in the 47th, 66th and 78th minutes. Endler earned yet another shutout in goal. 

Lyon now sit in first place in the D1 Arkema standings, with nine points from three games and a goal differential of 15. The strong French side has yet to concede a goal this season. Their next bit of league action is set to take place on Friday, September 24th at 9:30 a.m. PT against Guingamp. 

OL Legend Wendie Renard Hits 400 Games Played for Lyon 

Last Sunday, September 12, in OL’s 6-0 win over Dijon, Wendie Renard played her 400th game with the club. The outstanding center back and captain has been with the team since 2006. 

Women’s UEFA Champions League Draw 

This month, Lyon played two matches to earn their place in the group stage of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. The two-game series was played against Levante and OL advanced with an aggregate score of 4-2 after back-to-back 2-1 wins. 

The draw for the group stage of the Women’s Champions League took place on Monday and Lyon was drawn into Group D. Also in Group D is the German side Bayern Munich, the Swedish side BK Häcken and the Portuguese side Benfica. 

Olympique Lyonnais Men’s Side Earns Second Win of the Season 

OL took on Strasbourg in their fifth match of the Ligue 1 season and earned their second win of the season, two weeks after earning their first. In front of a home crowd, OL pulled off a 3-1 win and moved into seventh place in the Ligue 1 standings.  

OL got off on the front foot immediately, scoring their first goal of the match in the 8th minute when Moussa Dembélé beat Matz Sels in goal. Following the goal, OL kept possession of the ball and controlled the tempo of the game but were unable to find the back of the net again before the end of the half. 

OL put up an even stronger second half and managed to shut down the Strasbourg attack. In the 64th minute, Jason Denayer finished a corner kick to double Lyon’s lead. Substitute Lucas Paquetá showed a bit of skill and added a third goal for OL in the 87th minute of the match. In the seventh minute of stoppage time, Strasbourg pulled one goal back on a penalty kick converted by Habib Diallo. 

OL travel to face Rangers FC on Thursday, September 16 in the Europa League group stage and then return to Ligue 1 action on Sunday, September 19 against their rivals Paris Saint-Germain.
