OL Féminin End Season With 8-0 Win
Lyon played its final match of the D1 Arkema season at Groupama OL Academy Décines-Charpieu, their home field, against Fleury 91. The rainy match was quickly dominated by OL, who forced Fleury to defend for nearly the whole match.
The goals started early and finished late for Lyon. The opening goal of the match was scored by Amel Majri in the 15th minute, when she struck rebounded ball into the back of net from inside the 18-yard box. Melvine Malard doubled the lead for Lyon just over ten minutes later with a far post shot in the 26th minute. OL put up one more goal in the first half, thanks to Nikita Parris, who found the back of the net from a skillful strike in the 32nd minute.
After halftime, Lyon did not let up. Parris found herself a second goal in the 54th minute, putting OL in the lead by four goals. Wendie Renard added her name to the list of goal scorers in the 65th minute, assisted by Dzsenifer Marozsán’s free kick delivery. Still pressing on, Eugénie Le Sommer followed up on a blocked shot and scored a sixth goal for the team in the 81st minute. Just three minutes later, Jodie Taylor headed a loose ball into the back of the net, adding a seventh for Lyon. With four minutes of stoppage time, Fleury attempted to shut down Lyon’s play, but were not successful. On a cross from Dzsenifer Marozsán, Kadeisha Buchanan headed home one last goal for OL, bringing the final score of the match to 8-0.
Lyon finished the season in second place, with 20 wins, one draw, one loss, and a goal differential of +72.
With the conclusion of the D1 Arkema season, three Olympique Lyonnais players will be heading over to Tacoma to play with OL Reign on loan. Sarah Bouhaddi, Dzsenifer Marozsán, and Eugénie Le Sommer, who all played in OL’s match against Fleury, will be arriving to Tacoma mid-June.
All three players had an excellent showing in Lyon’s last match. Bouhaddi earned a clean sheet, her 17th of the D1 Arkema season. Le Sommer came away with a goal and Marozsán earned two assists.
OL Players and Future OL Reign Players Shine in France
This week, two future OL Reign players received their IFFHS Best Players of the Year trophies for 2020 and a third was nominated for the Best Goalkeeper award in the French D1 League this season.
Sarah Bouhaddi received her trophy for being Best Goalkeeper by IFFHS for her season with Olympique Lyonnais in 2020 and Dzsenifer Marozsán received her trophy for being named Best Playmaker by IFHS in 2020. Their team, Olympique Lyonnais, was named the Best Team for 2020.
This season, Olympique Lyonnais player Ellie Carpenter has been nominated for the D1 Arkema Trophies, as well as future OL Reign player Phallon Tullis-Joyce, who has started and played 90 minutes of every match this season for Stade de Reims.
OL Féminin to Play in Women’s ICC in August
Olympique Lyonnais, reigning champions of the Women’s International Champions tournament will once again compete in the tournament in hopes of defending their title. The 2020 ICC tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so this summer marks the return of the tournament after two years.
In 2019, Olympique Lyonnais claimed the title after beating Atlético Madrid 1-0 in their first game of the tournament to move on to the championship game. In the final match, they played the North Carolina Courage. OL won the game 1-0 due to 57th minute goal from Dzsenifer Marozsán.
There are a total of four teams competing in the 2021 tournament. Olympique Lyonnais qualified thanks to their 2020 UEFA Women’s Champions League and D1 Arkema titles in 2020. Also competing in the tournaments is FC Barcelona, winners of the 2020 Spanish league and 2021 UEFA Women’s Champions League, the Portland Thorns, winners of the 2020 Fall series and 2021 Challenge Cup, and the Houston Dash, winners of the 2020 Challenge Cup.
The tournament will be played at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon from August 18 to 21. OL will play their first match against FC Barcelona and the winner of that match will play the winner of the American match between the Portland Thorns and Houston Dash. The losers of each match will play to determine who will take the third-place spot.
