Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle Named to U.S. WNT for Olympic Games in Tokyo

OL Reign forward Megan Rapinoe and midfielder Rose Lavelle have been named to the U.S. Women’s National Team 18-player roster for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Rapinoe and Lavelle were both called up to represent the U.S. during the June FIFA international window, where each played in two of the team’s three matches. Regular fixtures on the national team, Rapinoe and Lavelle have made 177 and 54 appearances for the USA respectively. Rapinoe has scored 59 goals and added 69 assists, while Lavelle has scored 14 goals and added 9 assists for the team.

At the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France – the last major tournament for the USWNT – the U.S. secured its second-consecutive title, while Lavelle and Rapinoe were individually recognized for their personal achievements, with Rapinoe winning the Golden Boot and Golden Ball, while Lavelle was awarded the Silver Ball.

The United States will be competing in Group G in the group stage of the Olympic Games along with Sweden, New Zealand, and Australia. The top-ranked United States has its first match of the Olympic Games on Monday, July 21 at 1:30 a.m. PT against No. 5 ranked Sweden at Tokyo Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. The team then takes on the No. 22 ranked New Zealand on Thursday, July 24 at 4:30 a.m. PT at Saitama Stadium in Saitama, Japan. To conclude its group stage play, the USA takes on No. 9 ranked Australia on Sunday, July 27 at 1:00 a.m. PT at Ibaraki Kashima Stadium in Kashima, Japan.

OL Reign’s June 26 Pride Match will also serve as the farewell match for Rapinoe and Lavelle, as they will depart OL Reign to join the USWNT after the game. The duo will join the stars and stripes in two matches against Mexico in preparation for the Olympic Games. They will then travel to Japan where the U.S. will look to capture a fifth gold medal, as they did in 1996, 2004, 2008 and 2012.
