Jodie Taylor Named NWSL Player of the Week

The National Women’s Soccer League announced today that it has named Reign FC forward Jodie Taylor as the league’s Player of the Week for Week 24. Taylor scored the game-winning goal in both of Reign FC’s matches during the week as the club clinched a spot in the playoffs.

The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.

Taylor had a tremendous outing against Utah on Wednesday, September 25. The forward assisted Bethany Balcer’s first goal of the night, then volleyed home the game-winner in the 86th minute to put the club in the driver’s seat as it pushed for a playoff spot.

Against Portland, Taylor notched the game-winner in the 27th minute, helping the club sweep the Thorns during the regular season for the first time since 2015. With the win, Reign FC secured a spot in the NWSL postseason.

Taylor has been a major contributor in the club’s playoff push. Of her four goals, three were game-winners, while another was the decisive goal in a 1-1 draw with Sky Blue on August 18. She also has two assists that secured draws for the club, helping the club to 12 of its 37 points.

It is the second Player of the Week award of Taylor’s career. The striker previously won the award in Week Six of the 2014 season, while playing for the Washington Spirit.

Reign FC has had four players named Player of the Week in 2019. Darian Jenkins won the award in Week 21, while forward Ifeoma Onumonu and midfielder Jess Fishlock earned the honor for Week 10 and Week 9, respectively.
